They are known for being tough, durable, and reliable which is why the military and police preferred to use only tactical flashlights since they are often used for emergencies and self-defense purposes.

Tactical Flashlights are a Completely Legal Self-Defense Weapon

Yes, tactical or EDC flashlights are completely legal to carry by law.  So far, there is no laws that prohibit a person from carrying a tactical flashlight.  


You can open or conceal carry a tactical flashlights in places like grocery stores, theaters, gyms, etc... where other weapons such as firearms or pocket knives are prohibited.


Although, tactical flashlights are often used as an improvised self-defense weapon as they are intended to be, they are not by law, recognized as any form of a weapon.  


Is this a loop hole in the law? Not really, but keep in mind that laws can change.  Be sure to always know your state and local laws.


Can You Carry a Tactical Flashlight on Airplanes?

Yes, tactical flashlights are legal to carry on airplanes.  If you travel frequently on airplanes, a tactical flashlight is a good option to use as a first line self-defense weapon since firearms or edged weapons are prohibited.

Final Thoughts

As a Police Officer, a tactical flashlight has been an essential tool on my duty belt.  It's helped me find dangerous suspects in the darkness and break windows during emergency situations.  

But, you don't have to be a Police Officer to carry a tactical flashlight. They are completely legal to carry and it has the potential to save someone's life. 

While most place prohibit you from carrying typical self-defense weapons such as a pocket knife, pepper spray, or a firearm, tactical flashlights are a good option to use if other self-defense tools are not available.
